XBOX showcase crushed it don't know if we will get another that good. I will have to play SeriesX again which i'm looking forward to. Great video don't wait so long for the next one. BUT this thing called life happens.

I don’t think letting a developer take their time and having a release date need be to mutually exclusive. I think the games industry could use a retooling on how they plan out their game development schedule. I much rather them take their time and pad the game release by 2 years, so they can get the game in a state they’re proud of.

E3 was the best! I hate how all the big companies decided to pull out and make their own thing (I blame Nintendo for getting that ball rolling). E3 used to be my Superbowl. I would sit down at the end of the day and go through all the conferences, trailers, and interviews. Now, I just check out a trailer when the title catches my eye. I neither know nor care about when these different "gaming events" take place now. Truly a sad time for the industry.

Personally, a really early release date announcement dulls the excitement for me when I know I have to wait years...I'd prefer to hear that a game is coming out in the next quarter.

I don't need release dates down to the day, but a release window "late 2024", "early 2025" etc would be nice. Personally, I get more excited when I know something is coming, and when.

I *heavily* disagree about asking for the release dates. If they're not ready to show us a release date and game play, then don't show it at all is my opinion because its just frustrating on both sides... The gamers want release dates and gameplay trailers, but the devs are afraid of giving dates too early for allowing a higher chance of delays and also afraid of gameplay trailers because its not graphically polished enough yet where they want to show the game off to the public, so they just make a fancy CGI trailer that doesn't represent the game at all which is costly and gamers still complain. The best way is show the game 1yr out from release, so that you confidently can give a release date and also show off game play. The reason they don't is probably because of the share holders I'd imagine, or just poor management on the PR team.

Doesn’t understand controversy both before and after explaining said controversy. You said it, we still don’t understand how/why Tango got shut down, it doesn’t add up and doesn’t happen under any other company laying studios off, hence an Xbox problem and not an industry problem. Also the bigger controversy with Xbox (at least for their fans) is the lost of exclusives, what could’ve been a strong showcase for getting into Xbox was instead simply a great 3rd party showcase. Many people feel burned by choosing Xbox over PS5 now that Xbox games are vague time exclusives (or multiplatform day 1 in the case of Doom).

I disagree with the take on release dates. It's absolutely fair for consumers to ask or wonder about it. When a developer shows you a trailer and you like what you see, the most rational response is "Cool, when do I get to play it?" No one's rushing anyone, just let us know when we can get our hands on it.

With Indy, I feel like they could just make the Metroid Prime like game and it would be an epic game. Metroid Prime needs a sequel even if it is a spiritual sequel. Too many are looking for that First Person platform puzzle and it works.

The only controversy I saw was that Joanna Dark and Fable character were *ugly*. I'm not a fan of pandering but because of these woke crying dipshits I hope the industry doubles down and every character is an ugly woman just to see them get triggered even more.

Alanah was hoping you would tackle on the right wing crowd shitting on minorities (South of Midnight having a black female lead, Fable character not looking like a pornstar, Joanna Dark having a jawline, Assasins Creed Yasuke character being black). The pricing tier is actually super reasonable. Summer Game Fest stream on UA-cam alone got 7.4million so if you went with the 1 minute ad ($250k) that works out to be 0.3 cents per stream viewer. If you can monetise 3/4% of those viewers you've made a great ROI. And I agree - I miss E3 SO FUCKING MUCH!

It is good that some studios are closing or some of the staff is being laid off. They are no longer ambitious or talented people as they used to be, and rookies are not worth hiring. Artificial intelligence will support the work on games. The graphics will be nicer, the performance better and definitely less bugs if any. Programmers and graphic designers will no longer lie about hardware. No more traitors. The production of the game will not take several years, but less than 2 or even a year. Something beautiful is ahead of us. There will be money, there will be opportunities. This is what console needs.

For the film industry it's a standard to view the marketing budget as the same amount as production budget which is why everyone says a film needs to make at least double it's production budget back to be profitable. It's also how a lot of people gauge what movie is a financial success or not. If you gross around 3x or more of the production budget then it's a great success. I 100% agree the games industry need to be more transparent about how much it costs to make these games and the budgets. Ideally that would give the general public more understanding of just how much money goes into making the actual game. Look up Matt Damon explaining this to Sean on Hot Ones. The question is answering why there are so many bad movies now as opposed to decades ago.

Re: Release Dates: The issue isn't that *I'm* demanding a release date when the company isn't ready to commit to one. The issue is that *companies* should stop putting out reveal trailers when they aren't ready to come up with a release date. If you're ready to reveal the game, it should be at the point that you're also confident about a release date. It's like this: You're dating a guy (you like a studio). You fall in love with the guy (you own all their previous games). One day, the guy gets down on his knee and proposes to you (the reveal trailer). You say yes! And then when you start trying to work with said guy on a wedding date, he clams up and can't give you any concretes. How does that make you feel? Does it give you the ick? It should. At the moment a game company reveals their game and starts hyping it up, they're 'engaging' you and trying to lock your interest in. And on the basis of that interest, they're then attracting investment (people saving up for the wedding gifts). But if you want me to be excited for your game, you have to give me some hope that you plan to actually follow through and release this game, and that you aren't just doing a song and a dance for my attention. Estimated release dates or even release quarters tell me you're serious and that the thing you want me to hope for is really truly making its way to the real world. Otherwise, please don't bother. At the stage that you're showing me something without any sense of when I'll be able to actually play it, you're just producing pornography. Again, I'm not demanding a release date. What I'm demanding is that you don't waste my time showing me the ring unless you actually have a window for the wedding date in mind. --- As to MS/XBOX catching more flack for studio shutdowns, you said it yourself: Tango got shut down. This after MS/XBOX themselves extolled the virtues of Hi-FI Rush. It's not that they shut down a decent studio. It's that they shut down a sustainable studio after acknowledging that the work the studio was doing was something to aspire to--they shut down their one Japanese development studio that would've creaked open the gate to greater engagement with the Japanese game industry, which they have been aggressively courting for years and years. So, it's the hypocrisy of the shutdown, not that there was a shutdown. In XBOX's case, the only logical answer for this is that they've thoroughly jumped onboard the profit margin train. Tango is sustainable, not profitable, which means even though there's profit to be made from studios like Tango making great games, that profit is not large enough, or does not create a wide enough distance from production cost, to justify and appease shareholders. This pressure is felt even more because XBOX needs enough massive games making record profits to cover their flops, and since Tango and Hi-FI Rush are sustainable, they're not covering those flops, and are therefore ultimately treated by XBOX as a net loss on the maximum return to shareholders they project is possible by diverting that funding to studios making games that will rake in profits. --- As to SGF, I think you've inadvertently explained why the problem with SGF is Geoff. As you said, at E3, companies would spend many (often hundreds) of thousands of dollars to set up their booths--booths that would be up for entire weekends; booths whereat they could engage with event attendees and network with other companies. We're not talking about $250,000 for a booth for a weekend. We're talking about $250,000 for a single minute of airtime, booth not included. I don't actually think Geoff is trying to keep the strange fan magic of E3 alive. I think he's trying to increase the marketability factor (mainstream-ification) of games, which nobody has ever asked for. Which is why people like Nicholas Cage, who was effectively a meme DLC for Dead By Daylight, are getting stage time. What made SGF shite is that it had precisely none of what E3 had, which booths, networking, and boots-on-the-ground engagement notwithstanding, included developers themselves going onstage to joyfully and awkwardly make fools of themselves (in the best way) whilst presenting their own games and giving demonstrations. SGF isn't about the showcase. It's about the marketing factor, which is why Geoff meticulously pruned it into a series of video presentations alternating with trailers-as-ads, and why there was no missed opportunity to market sponsors, such as having sponsor logos in the bottom bar any time Geoff was up on stage presenting. We can bemoan the E3 edgelords, but Geoff has very intentionally made SGF un-supercut-able, and for as much cringe as was crammed into those E3 supercuts, the very kooky-ness of E3 that gave us the supercuts is what also made watching E3 the experience that it ultimately was.

I will never understand gamers demanding a game be released sooner. Theres so many games coming out right now. Get your head out of the AAA bubble. Find something else to do. Replay your favorite games. I have no time to finish most games that I like much less go back and play my favorites now. Theres just too many games. Ignore the hype and just play things when they come out. You don't NEED a game to be released.

I haven't cared to try a Gears since 3, but the E-Day trailer with Mad World actually got my hyped.

Tango was shut down because most of the Japanese devs had already left the studio after Hi-fi Rush and forcing them to continue would risk another Redfall and Arkane Austin situation.

There's definitely too many games that are using unreal engine causing this all games look the same issue across the video game industry. We used to have so many game engines with uniqueness and now it's basically unreal 5 and unity.

Re: dates. I think setting expectations is important. Giving us an expected release date/year roughly shows where the game is in production. You don’t have to stick to it, plans change, but just be honest. Xbox specifically has been pretty bad in the past about announcing a load of games that haven’t released for 3, 4 or more years later. We’re still waiting for many of them. I thought their showcase was mostly excellent, though there was less gameplay than I’d like, but I might feel very differently about it if we knew half those games with no dates weren’t releasing till 2026, 2027 or beyond. Basically don’t announce games too early it only sets false expectations.

I am kinda annoyed people seemed to forget how Sony closed their Japanese studio and especially their UK studios a day after Jim Ryan visited them in person during his swan song as CEO.

Pricing didn't seem that off to me? It's a lot of eyeballs he's guaranteeing. Plus I got the impression they sprinkle in a few indies that they do for free/cheap?
